Central Bank celebrates its 30th Anniversary
The
Central Bank of Barbados is celebrating its 30th
anniversary in May. To commemorate the occasion, the Bank will
hold a week of activities, commencing with a Service of
Thanksgiving at the St. Michael's Cathedral on Sunday, May 5,
2002.
Other
events include City Nights, a series of artistic performances in
the Frank Collymore Hall. Performances include an evening of
Dance with Sheron Trotman and her dance troupe, an evening of
classical music with Barbados' outstanding virtuoso pianist Mrs.
Janice Millington, and an evening of chamber music with the
well-loved Barbados Chamber Orchestra. The "Pan in
the Plaza Extravaganza" which will showcase steelbands from
the island's schools will also be among the featured events.
Other activities include an exhibition of arts and craft by the
Bank's staff and a Health Fair.
The Bank will
be hosting two seminars. The first will feature an address on
the topic "Reform of the International Financial
Architecture" by Professor Stephany Griffith–Jones,
Director of the Institute of Development Studies of the
University of Sussex, followed immediately by a Panel Discussion
chaired by Governor Dr. Marion Williams and including
Professor Clive Thomas, Director of the Institute of Economic
Development at the University of Guyana and former Central Bank
Governors, Sir Courtney Blackman, and Mr. Winston Cox.
A second
panel discussion on "Caribbean Economic Integration:
Challenges and the Way Forward" is scheduled to be part of
the activities.
The
high point of the week will be an Awards Ceremony and Dinner at
which milestone awards will be given to long-standing employees
and special achievers.
The
Bank will also donate an auto refractor machine to the Sir
Winston Scott Polyclinic, an institution named for our first
native Governor-General, in whose honour the Bank has instituted
a lecture series. The decision to donate this computerised
instrument which is used to determine whether a person is near
or far-sighted, and which eliminates observer error, reflects
the Bank's ongoing
efforts
to highlight the life and work of the late medical practitioner
and Governor-General of Barbados Sir Winston Scott. The Bank
also sees it as a valuable gift to the people of Barbados.
In
commenting on the Bank's achievements over the years, Dr.
Williams observed that the Bank's operational autonomy, its
emphasis on high quality output and its exacting standards had
contributed to its high profile within the commercial banking
and business communities as well as to the respect with which it
was viewed by regional central banks and international financial
institutions. The Bank had always aimed to be a Centre of
Excellence and these qualities had allowed it to achieve that
objective.
The
Bank would like to invite all Barbadians to join with it in
celebrating this significant milestone, by attending the several
public events.
The
Central Bank of Barbados was established on May 2, 1972.
