Central Bank Issues Banknotes with Upgraded Security Features
The Central Bank of Barbados today announced that beginning
August 20, 2007 it will be issuing banknotes with new and
upgraded security features that are intended to make Barbadian
currency even more secure.
“The
decision to upgrade the security features is in keeping with
international best practice and allows us to incorporate more
advanced anti-counterfeiting technology in our banknotes. This
will ensure that the integrity of Barbadian currency continues
to be protected,” explained
Victor Springer, Deputy Governor, Operations.
Springer
revealed that among the new and upgraded features were a second
watermark-type image, easily distinguishable security threads,
enhanced UV-readable elements and significantly raised print in
certain areas. He further stated that the $2, $5, $10, $20 and
$50 notes will be issued first while the upgraded $100 will be
issued at a later date.
Barbadians
will first have the opportunity to see the upgraded banknotes
during the Bank’s annual Know Your Money seminar. The seminar
is open to the public and will be held on Friday, August 17,
2007, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Grand Salle of the Tom
Adams Financial Centre. The presenter will be Damian
Kwiatkowski, Regional Manager for De La Rue Currency, the
printer of local banknotes.
“We
will be using this occasion to introduce the features so that
the public can become familiar with them before the notes go
into circulation,” Springer said. “I would encourage
everyone, especially cashiers, to attend.”
The
upgraded notes will circulate simultaneously with older issues
of banknotes, and both will be legal tender and perfectly
acceptable.
For
more information on the upgrades or the seminar, contact Miss
Sherri Bishop at 436-6870 Ext. 6348.
