Central
Bank of Barbados to host Information Technology Fair for
Students of Secondary Schools
The
Central Bank of Barbados today announced that it will be hosting
an information technology (IT) fair for Secondary Schools on
November 8, 9 and 10, 2004.
The
fair, under the theme, “Information Technology and
Education - Investing in Our Future”, is an innovation to
the Secondary Schools’ Outreach programme which the Bank has
sponsored for more than two decades. Traditionally, the outreach
programme has focused on lectures in banking, finance and
economics for students preparing for the Caribbean Examinations
Council’s CSEC and CAPE programmes.
The
Bank, Barbados Institute of Banking and Finance (BIBF), PRISM
and seven information technology (IT) vendors will showcase the
technologies employed in business. The IT vendors participating
in the fair are: Cable and Wireless, IBM, Vision Systems,
Sunbeach, Regional Business Systems, Illuminat and Fujitsu-ICL.
In
announcing the plans for the fair, Governor Dr. Marion Williams
said that the event will commence with an official opening
ceremony at 8:45 a.m. on Monday, November 8, 2004 at the Frank
Collymore Hall. Following the opening ceremony, the students
will take guided tours of the exhibition, which will be set up
in the Hall and Grande Salle. Twelve hundred students and over
fifty teachers are expected to visit the expo over the three-day
period.
The
booths will showcase in a practical manner many of the topics
covered in the IT syllabus, including: Application Development
and Programming Collaboration, Computer Hardware Technology,
Edutech Software, Internet and High Speed Networks, Mobile and
Wireless, Networking and Security applications. In addition, students
will see how the payment systems operate, as there will be a
demonstration of how cheques are processed and cleared
electronically.
The
idea for the fair emanated from a request by teachers of fourth,
fifth and sixth form students for a demonstration of how
information technology is put to work in the banking community.
Miss Janice Marshall, Director of the MIS Department of the
Central Bank, has been the initiator and coordinator of the
fair.
Governor
Williams said that the Bank was pleased to be associated with
the fair, given the emphasis on information technology as a
means of improving efficiency in all facets of life, especially
in the workplace. Dr. Williams also thanked the IT vendors,
PRISM and the BIBF for partnering with the Bank in this venture.
