The Central Bank of
Barbados Launches Coins in Honour of Cricket Heroes
The Central
Bank of Barbados will on Thursday, April 5, 2007 launch two
commemorative coins in honour of the outstanding contribution of
four of this island’s most famous cricket icons.
One in honour of the Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers
and the other honouring the 3W’s - the late Sir Frank Worrell,
Sir Clyde Walcott and Sir Everton Weekes.
The two coins
are each available in twenty-two carat gold and silver, and
carry the denomination “Fifty Dollars” and” Five
Dollars”, respectively. The Right Excellent Sir Garfield
Sobers is featured playing his powerful cover drive on the
reverse side of one of the coins. The other one bears the David
Skinner image of the 3W’s relaxing together on the cricket
field with a cricket bat and ball beside them. The obverse sides
of both coins carry the Barbados Coat of Arms.
The Central
Bank of Barbados is pleased to launch these two coins in honour
of four of our legendary cricketers at this very special time. “We at the Bank support the pursuit of excellence and
firmly believe that its attainment should be recognised. There
can be no question that the Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers,
Sir Clyde Walcott, Sir Everton Weekes and Sir Frank Worrell all
achieved excellence, while making outstanding contributions to
this country,” Governor Dr. Marion Williams commented.
Both the gold
and silver coins will be available from the Central Bank, while
the silver coins can also be purchased from Bridgetown Cruise
Terminals Inc., Duty Free Caribbean and Rosbar Studios Inc.,
Pelican Village at a price of BDS$2,000 (gold) and BDS$300
(silver), commencing Tuesday, April 10, 2007.
The official launch takes place at the Grande Salle of the Tom
Adams Financial Centre.
