This paper takes a look at the role of services in the external account between 1960 and 1986. It defines services and then comments on their contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP); next, the growth and composition of earnings from services is examined. The remaining sections discuss the relative importance of the balance on services and merchandise and highlight factor services, especially debt servicing.
