Central Bank of Barbados to Host Conference for the Financial Sector

The Central Bank of Barbados and the Financial Services Commission (FSC) will host the 10th Domestic Financial Institutions Conference, a one-day symposium for senior officials from Barbados financial services sector, on Thursday, March 28, 2019.

“This year’s conference will touch on many of the topical issues, including a keynote panel discussion that will explore how we can strengthen Barbados’s financial sector,” previewed Novaline Brewster, Chief of Corporate Communications at the Central Bank. “There will be a presentation on the shift toward e-payments by Henry Olhsson, the Deputy Governor of Sweden’s central bank. Sweden is leading the world in this area, and given Barbados’ goal of moving away from cheques and in that direction, this session is particularly timely.

Brewster went on to explain that while attendance at the conference was by invitation only, the Central Bank will livestream the keynote panel discussion as well as the presentations on the economy and on the trends in payment systems. “We consider these sessions to be of broader public interest, so we will broadcast them live on our Facebook page, YouTube channel and website. The livestream will begin at 8:15 a.m.”

The Central Bank and the FSC are Barbados’ two financial regulators, and are responsible for overseeing the operations of the local financial sector. In addition to co-hosting the conference annually, the two organisations jointly publish an annual Financial Stability Report, which examines the health of Barbados’ financial system. In 2018, they also collaborated on the establishment of a regulatory sandbox for financial technology (FinTech) products and services.
