Creative writing will be in the spotlight at the 21st Frank Collymore Literary Endowment (FCLE) Awards, which takes place on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. in the Courtney Blackman Grande Salle.
During the ceremony, the winners of the FCLE’s 2018 competition will be announced, with the top three writers receiving cash awards for their works. “We are pleased once again to be able to support our local poets, authors and playwrights,” said Novaline Brewster, Chief of Corporate Communications at the Central Bank of Barbados, which has sponsored the competition since its inception. “As Governor Haynes said at last year’s ceremony, there is an indelible link between the literary arts and our national development. The stronger our literary tradition, the richer our culture becomes.”
“This will also be the FCLE’s first year under the stewardship of Esther Philips, and we are eager to hear her vision for the endowment going forward,” Brewster added. Philips, who was recently named Barbados’ first poet laureate, assumed chairpersonship of the FCLE in January 2018.
The featured speaker at the ceremony will be Professor Emeritus Funso Aiyejina of the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, who will speak on the topic “Writing for Prizes, or Prizes for Writing?”
The Frank Collymore Literary Endowment started in 1988. Its goal is to support and develop the literary arts in Barbados.
