Veteran Artist Wins Big at the 2019 Crop Over Visual Arts Festival

Cy Hutchison was the ultimate winner at the Central Bank of Barbados Crop Over Visual Arts Festival, which was launched on Monday, July 9 at the Courtney Blackman Grande Salle. Hutchison, a past finalist, won the coveted titles of the Governor’s Award and the Central Bank Award of Excellence for his pieces “Primitive Modern #6” and “Trying to Find”.

The Central Bank of Barbados is celebrating its 25th year of sponsoring the festival, which both gives local artists the opportunity to explore their creative palette and creates a unique place for artists to feature their work.

This year the National Cultural Foundation has enhanced the exhibition by taking a look into the past. A special commemorative exhibition features a selection of art from previous Purchase Award and other special award winners. These pieces are now part of the Central Bank’s collection.

Central Bank Governor Cleviston Haynes during his remarks at the opening highlighted the importance of the arts. “We recognize that the arts – whether it's music, theatre, literature, dance or the paintings, photos, and sculptures that grace this hall and the Queen’s Park Gallery – can excite, provoke, soothe, and stimulate.”

The 2019 Central Bank of Barbados Crop Over Visual Arts Festival features the work of a variety of local artists. It runs from July 10 to August 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Courtney Blackman Grande Salle and the Queen’s Park Gallery. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
