The large majority of Caribbean peoples are less well off in 1987 than they were in 1970. A few countries have sustained rising living standards, but the economies of the most populous have contracted quite severely. Almost everywhere there is the threat that things will get worse. In 1970, the economies were far from healthy: average living standards were poor, and the countries were well shy of any assured pattern of growth.
