Differential productivity growth between the private sector and the public sector has been advanced as one reason for the growing size of government. This paper utilizes a model formalised by Baumol (1967) to test this assertion in the context of the Barbados economy. The results indicate that the unbalanced growth productivity hypothesis cannot be easily rejected especially for the pre-1973 period.
