Central Bank of Barbados Pays Tribute to Sir Stephen Emtage

The Central Bank of Barbados mourns the passing of Sir Stephen Emtage, a distinguished public servant whose contribution to the development of the Bank spanned its earliest years and nearly three decades of its history.

Even before the Bank opened its doors, Sir Stephen was involved in the work that helped lay its foundations, serving on the committee responsible for the technical preparation of the legislation establishing the Central Bank of Barbados. He joined the Bank’s Board in 1973 as the first Director of Finance and Planning and went on to become its longest-serving Board member, serving for 27 years until his resignation in December 2000.

Sir Stephen’s outstanding public service was recognised with the award of the GCM in 1980. The history of the Central Bank is therefore inextricably linked with his years of service, commitment, and contribution.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of working with him. We honour his memory and his service to Barbados.
