Mehmooda Piprawala is the Central Bank of Barbados’ 2019 SPISE Scholar

Mehmooda Piprawala is the Central Bank of Barbados’ 2019 SPISE (Students Programme for Innovation in Science and Engineering) Scholar. The scholarship will allow her to take part in a four-week residential programme for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) students at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill.

The 17-year-old Harrison College student, who is currently studying Physics, Chemistry, and Pure Maths, and hopes to eventually become a biomedical engineer, believes that the programme will help her prepare for the future. “It will expose me to what engineering is like at the university level, and it will give me more exposure to things that I might not have known about or learned at school.”

Jonathan Farnum, the Central Bank’s 2016 SPISE scholar and a 2019 summer intern, who is pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering at New York University, agreed. “The SPISE programme simulates life in a university environment, providing a large and varied workload from a meticulously structured curriculum. The course-long, hands-on group projects that students will work on provide an opportunity to apply their knowledge as well as gain fresh insight into the versatility of technology and the near endless career possibilities within the field of STEM.”

SPISE is an initiative of the Caribbean Science Foundation. The programme runs from July 15 to mid-August.
