After first functioning as a steering committee for more than 10 years, the Barbados Alzheimer’s Association registered as a charity in 2007. Since its inception, the association has focused on educating the Barbadian public about Alzheimer’s disease and its impact not only on the person suffering from the disease, but also on his/her family and caregivers. With more than 4,000 Barbadians suffering from the Alzheimer’s (2014) and people in their 40s and 50s being diagnosed with the disease, this is a critical need.
Because of the prevalence of the disease in Barbados, the association hosts yearly seminars for medical professionals, residential facilities for the elderly, and other caregivers; and in 2016, it hosted its first regional conference, which resulted in the formation of a Caribbean alliance.
In 2017-2018, the Barbados Alzheimer’s Association hopes to establish a dedicated day care centre for Alzheimer’s patients.
