When BiMPay, the Central Bank of Barbados’ new national instant payment system, goes live, it will do more than allow you to send and receive money in seconds. The system is not only designed to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year round, it also introduces smart features that make payments safer, simpler, and more flexible.
Here are three you should understand.
One of the biggest concerns people have when making electronic payments is simple: What if I send money to the wrong person?
Confirmation of Payee is designed to reduce that risk.
When you enter someone’s alias, the system checks the name attached to that account and sends you a message showing the name of the accountholder and asking you to confirm whether that individual or entity is indeed your intended recipient. It is only then that it lets you send the payment.
This feature gives you the opportunity to pause and correct an error before the money leaves your account. It helps prevent misdirected payments and gives you greater confidence, especially when sending money to someone for the first time.
Request to Pay lets you ask for a payment rather than waiting for someone to remember to send it.
Instead of sending your details and hoping for follow-up, you can issue a payment request through BiMPay. The other person can review the request and approve it instantly.
Similarly, when you owe someone, they can send you a digital payment request. You receive a notification, review the details, and choose whether to approve or decline it. No money moves unless you authorise it.
Request to Pay makes splitting a bill much easier. After dinner with friends, one person can send individual payment requests for each share of the total. Everyone receives their request, confirms the amount, and pays in seconds.
It is also useful for service providers. For example, a caterer, mechanic, or graphic designer can send a Request to Pay once the job is complete. The customer receives the notification, reviews the amount, and authorises the payment instantly. This feature keeps the process clear, reduces back-and-forth, and gives both parties a record of what was requested and paid.
QR codes, the square barcodes that store information your smartphone can read, have become part of everyday life. With BiMPay, they become a powerful payment tool.
You open your bank’s mobile app or the BiMPay e-wallet, select the option to pay by QR code, and scan. The payment details appear on your screen for you to review, confirm, and pay.
Both you and the recipient receive confirmation immediately.
BiMPay supports both static and dynamic QR codes. Static QR codes contain basic information such as the merchant’s details and you enter the amount before approving the payment. Meanwhile, dynamic QR codes are generated for each transaction and can include the payment amount.
Not only do QR codes eliminate the need to type long account numbers, but they reduce errors and offer a low-cost way for small businesses to accept digital payments. They also make in-person transactions fast and seamless.
BiMPay is not just about speed, although funds will move within seconds. It is about building a payment ecosystem that is secure, through features like Confirmation of Payee; flexible, with tools like Request to Pay, and inclusive and convenient, through QR code payments. Together, these features ensure that when you send or receive money, you can do so confidently, efficiently, and on your terms. As we move closer to full implementation, understanding how these tools work will help you get the most out of Barbados’ new national instant payment system.
