Over the next few days, Barbadians will have the opportunity to see banknotes from around the globe. That’s because of the Central Bank of Barbados’ Window to the World currency exhibition, which features currency from six continents and more than 85 countries and territories.
The exhibition showcases banknotes from countries as diverse as Switzerland, Fiji, Nigeria, Bermuda, Oman, Tonga, and Brazil, with their cultures being highlighted through images of national leaders, flora and fauna, and landscapes.
During the official launch, Central Bank Deputy Director of Currency, Octavia Gibson emphasised this aspect of the notes, saying “Banknotes are the perfect canvas on which to paint a national self-portrait.” Using Barbados’ currency as an example, Gibson highlighted the Coat of Arms, broken trident and other national symbols; the architecture, such as the Charles Duncan O’Neal Bridge and the Morgan Lewis Windmill, and the national icons that adorn the notes.
There is also a display of banknotes from Zimbabwe’s hyperinflation period, including the highest denomination banknote ever printed, the $100 trillion dollar note.
Window to the World runs from June 4-9, 2019 in Exchange Interactive Centre (next to the Central Bank) from 10.00 a.m. to 6 p.m. The exhibition is free of charge and is open to the public.
