Career Opportunity: Chief Research Economist, Research and Economic Analysis Department

Job Summary

The successful candidate will be required to lead the Bank’s research agenda and macroeconomic and financial programming models, and work with unit heads and deputies to improve the Quarterly Economic Outlook.

They will also produce economic policy analysis and research, develop staff, and represent the Bank among national, regional, and international stakeholders.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities will include:

Leadership and Management

  • Assisting in the day-to-day operations of the Research and Economic Analysis Department in partnership with the Director
  • Setting the annual research plan, aligning topics to policy priorities, allocating resources, and tracking delivery

Modelling and Forecasting

  • Developing and implementing improvements in procedures for the Bank’s macroeconomic and financial programming models, including documentation, validation, version control, and change management
  • Contributing to the Quarterly Economic Outlook process, from assumptions and data governance to review and publication

Policy Support and Analysis

  • Supervising and quality‑assurance of all external requests for macroeconomic support, setting service levels, and ensuring timely, rigorous responses
  • Conducting original research on Barbados and Caribbean economies, delivering working papers and policy briefs

Outreach and representation

  • Presenting research and policy analysis at domestic, regional, and international conferences, and coordinating the Department’s public outreach programme
  • Building and maintaining effective relationships with ministries, regulators, IFIs, academia, and the public

People Development and Training

  • Identifying appropriate conferences and journals for targeting
  • Coordinating the Department’s training program, including methods refreshers and seminar series
  • Supervising the Annual Review Seminar
  • Coaching research staff and interns in the production of policy and academic research

Governance and Other

  • Instituting peer review, replication checks, and archiving standards for all outputs
  • Contributing to the team effort by accomplishing any other related duties as assigned

Relationships

Collaborating closely with Bank departments and engaging counterparts in national, regional, and international agencies, as well as the general public

Education/Experience:

  • Postgraduate degree in Economics or a closely related field, with a minimum of five (5) years in an applied economic or policy research environment
  • Strong publication record in credible journals and publications
  • Proficiency with statistical and econometric software and data tools, for example Stata, R, Python, EViews, or Matlab, plus spreadsheets
