Central Bank of Barbados Launches New Non-Technical Magazine

Barbadians looking to develop a better understanding of the economy and how it works now have an additional resource from which to draw. It comes in the form of Economic Insight.bb, the Central Bank of Barbados’ new bi-annual magazine, which was launched on September 16.

“Economic Insight.bb is not your typical central bank publication,” reveals Novaline Brewster, Public Affairs Officer at the Central Bank. “The focus is on how the economy and economic policies impact the average Barbadian. It also gives insight into how and why certain decisions are made and about how broader events, both local and international, impact us as a country. EI.bb demystifies economics and tells you what you need to know using straightforward language and dynamic images and illustrations.”

Brewster described the look and feel of Economic Insight.bb as similar to a lifestyle magazine but reiterated that its content is substantive. “We’re focusing on meaty issues, but we’re doing it in a relatable and engaging way.”

Central Bank of Barbados Governor, Dr. DeLisle Worrell, revealed that the theme of the first issue is Excellence. “In the past 50 years, the areas in which we as a nation have thrived are the areas where there has been exceptional performance and a sustained commitment to achieving and maintaining the highest standards. Our first edition of Economic Insight.bb shines a spotlight on Barbadians and Barbadian institutions that are world class.”

While an artist’s rendering of international superstar Rihanna wearing her iconic Met Gala gown graces the cover, less well-known entities and individuals such as the Barbados Fertility Centre and Alan Emtage, who invented the first search engine, are also profiled in the publication. “These case studies, and the others we will feature in future editions, provide a road map. The commitment to excellence at an individual and national level is key to our island’s continued success,” said Worrell.

The first edition of EI.bb also delves into topical domestic economic issues such as the critical role that maintaining an adequate level of foreign reserves plays in keeping the economy stable. Another article provides an explanation of “printing money”, a term that has been mentioned often in recent years, but that is probably misunderstood by Barbadians outside of economic circles.

Economic Insight.bb is free of charge and will be available in both electronic format and print.
