Central Bank of Barbados to host seminar on Capital Market Issues

The state of the Caribbean, the global economy and the international capital market will be examined at a Central Bank of Barbados-sponsored seminar on Tuesday, May 11, 2004 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Frank Collymore Hall. 

Governor Dr. Marion Williams says the seminar titled “The Caribbean, the Global Economy and the International Capital Market” will discuss some very pertinent capital market issues in a Caribbean and global context, including:

  • The Development of the Caribbean Capital Market
  • The Outlook for the Global Economy, Interest and Exchange Rates
  • The Caribbean and International Capital Market
  • The Role of Rating Agencies in the Development of the International Capital Market
  • The Issuing and Trading of Notes and Bonds in the Caribbean Capital Market – a commercial banker’s perspective

“The Central Bank has managed to attract a cadre of Caribbean and international financial experts, including Mr. Geoffrey Bell, Chief Executive Officer, Geoffrey Bell and Company; Dr. Carl Ross, Senior Managing Director, Bear, Stearns and Company; Ms. Marie Cavanaugh, Managing Director, Standard and Poor’s and Mr. Steve Bideshi, Managing Director, Citibank, Trinidad and Tobago to make presentations on topics that should be of immense interest and relevance to bankers, economists, investment managers, brokers, financial and economic consultants and all students of banking, finance and international business,” Dr. Williams stated.

The morning’s activities end with a panel discussion on the topic “The Caribbean Capital Money Market: the Way Forward.” The panel includes Mr. Roger Cave, Investment Manager, Fortress Caribbean; Mr. Cleviston Haynes, Director, Bank Supervision, Central Bank of Barbados; Mr. Mariano Browne, Chief Executive Officer, Bank of Butterfield and Mr. Gemel Sobers, Associate Director, Capital Markets, FirstCaribbean International Bank, and will be chaired by Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Barbados Mr. Darcy Boyce.
