Central Bank of Barbados Welcomes Summer Interns

Eighteen tertiary level students will be gaining practical work experience at the Central Bank of Barbados this summer. The students, who come from the Barbados Community College, the University of the West Indies Cave Hill and St. Augustine campuses, and the University of Tampa, Florida, major in subjects ranging from Economics to Theatre Arts and will be working in departments related to their fields of study.

Among the new interns are the winner of the Central Bank of Barbados Scholarship, Jade Kirton, and winner of the Central Bank offered Roland Craigwell Memorial scholarship, Rashada Lopez. Both will be working in the organisation’s Research and Economic Analysis Department (READ). Lopez described what she would like to get out of the internship by saying, “The experience is the most important thing. Being in one of the environments where I look to establish a career; I think that getting the experience in conducting economic research and being in the field itself, is what I want most in the internship”.

The Central Bank’s internship programme is a long-running one, and several past interns have gone on to find fulltime employment at the Bank. Ke-anne Evans, who interned at the Bank in 2014 and 2015 and currently works in the Legal Section, offered some advice to this year’s interns. “Always be respectful, mannerly, exhibit genuine kindness and be willing to assist your colleagues in whatever way you can whether it be big or small.” She added, “how you carry yourself and treat others are important nonverbal characteristics that define who you are as an individual and what kind of employee you will be.”

The internship programme runs from June 1 until the end of August.
