The Annual Review Seminar Helps to Develop Budding Economists

The Central Bank of Barbados’ Annual Review Seminar is an opportunity for economists and people in related fields to share their research and get advice from a panel of experts. The four-day seminar, now in its 41st year, also includes a keynote address from a noted regional economist and presentations on a range of topical issues.

Anton Belgrave, Director of the Bank’s Research and Economic Analysis Department (READ), explains why the seminar is so valuable. “Presenters both get feedback on a specific piece of research and gain the experience of presenting information before diverse audiences.”

Christopher Kinch, an economist at the Bank who has presented on six occasions, concurs, sharing how the experience has benefitted him:

“Over the years, presenting at the Annual Review Seminar has helped me immensely in developing my public speaking skills and also provided an opportunity for me to network with other economists from throughout the region and the rest of the world. The assessments and critiques you receive on your empirical research can provide both immediate and future returns, and aid in your development as an economist.”

This year, the Annual Review Seminar will be held online from July 27 to 30, 2021. The theme, “Pursuing Resilience in the Shadow of COVID: Overcoming the Pandemic’s Economic Fallout”, seeks to explore these issues from a Caribbean perspective, promoting research aimed at fostering transformative growth. This year’s seminar will address a wide range of topics:

  • Economic Growth and Human Development Beyond 2020: Reimagining the Future
  • Promoting and Protecting Natural Resources and the Environment
  • Monetary and Financial Sector Issues: Promoting Viability Through Innovation
  • Efficiencies in the Public Sector as a Catalyst for Sustainable Growth
  • Perspectives on Openness: Sustainable Engagement for Small Open Economies
  • Fiscal and Debt Dynamics in Times of Uncertainty

The deadline to submit abstracts is Friday, June 4.
