The Central Bank of Barbados announces, with much regret, the recent passing of U Tin Tun, its second General Manager, in Australia. He was 93 years old.
Tin Tun, a national of Burma (now Myanmar) came to Barbados in August 1973 through a technical assistance arrangement with the International Monetary Fund. He brought a wealth of central banking expertise, having worked as a senior official at the Reserve Bank of India, and assisted in the establishment of the Central Bank of Burma and the Central Bank of the Gambia, acting as the first governor of the latter institution.
Tin Tun spent just over four years at the Central Bank of Barbados. The Bank’s first governor, Sir Courtney Blackman credits him with helping to lay the operational foundations of the Bank and providing invaluable advice and guidance during a difficult period. In addition to their business relationship, U Tin Tun and Sir Courtney became personal friends and Sir Courtney has often referred to him as the “wise man from the east”.
Current Governor, Dr. DeLisle Worrell said the Bank was truly saddened by the passing of Tin Tun, who from all records, served with distinction during the formative years of the institution. He extended sympathy to his mourning relatives.
After his assignment at the Bank, Tin Tun was instrumental in helping to establish the Central Bank of the Seychelles and the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank. He and his wife were guests of the Central Bank of Barbados during the 25th and 30th Anniversary Celebrations.
U Tin Tun’s body was cremated and his ashes will be taken to Philadelphia to be buried beside the remains of his first wife. A memorial service is to be held in New York on a date to be announced.
