This paper is focused on the resource base and long-run sustainability of the Barbados National Insurance and Social Security Scheme. It highlights the benefits that are presently administered by the Scheme and any major factors that may serve to inhibit the Scheme by imposing non-viability on it in the foreseeable future. The key question will be whether the NIS will still be viable in the future without any changes in the present structure. The options available to the scheme as well as any policy recommendations are examined. (Note: Prepared while the author was an intern with the Central Bank of Barbados, October-December 1995.
