This paper provides a descriptive survey of the spread of financial intermediation in the Barbadian economy between 1950 and 1990. It examines the state of the financial sector, contrasting it with the level of development in the pre-1950 period and traces the gradual evolution of the financial system over the four decades of this period, enabling an analysis of institutional changes, their rationale and their impact on the financial system. Finally it provides some reflections on possible areas of financial sector development in the future.
