How Secure are Instant Payments

The Central Bank of Barbados is developing BiMPay, a national instant payment system that will allow all Barbadians to send and receive money to anyone anywhere in Barbados on a 24/7, 365-day-a-year basis.

Instant payments are fast and easy to use and facilitate many different types of transactions. You can pay for groceries, send money to a loved one or renew your driver’s licence. Businesses can send money to their suppliers or receive payment from clients, and Government can issue tax refunds or pay pensions. And the transactions are completed and settled in real-time, with both the sender and recipient getting immediate confirmation.

There’s no question that instant payments offer many benefits. But, as with anything that concerns your money, especially when it comes to digital transactions, one of the key questions you want to know is, how secure are they?

Instant payments are very secure, thanks in part to the different security features incorporated in the instant payments System such as multifactor authentication (MFA), encryption, fraud detection and the use of aliases.

From the moment you start a transaction, it goes through multiple layers of security designed to protect your information and keep your money safe.

Multifactor Authentication

It begins with multifactor authentication, which ensures only you can approve payments from your account by requiring some combination of passwords, biometrics such as fingerprint or facial recognition, tokens, one-time passwords (OTPs), or PIN codes to verify your identity. These measures are designed to drastically reduce the chances of unauthorised access, even if someone were able to fraudulently acquire your password.

Encryption

At the core of the system is end-to-end encryption which scrambles your messages, making them unreadable to anyone who intercepts them. Encryption ensures that all your sensitive information is secured and protected.

Fraud Detection

While encryption protects your data, fraud detection systems monitor every transaction you make and look for any suspicious activity. Should someone try to access your account from a strange location, try to execute multiple transactions in too short a period of time, or attempt to transfer a sum of money that doesn’t fit your usual pattern, the system picks it up and flags it. It can also stop these transactions, reducing the risk of your money falling into the wrong hands.

Aliases

Instant payment systems also use aliases, or proxy identifiers, which act as stand-ins for your account information. This could be your phone number, email address, or even a QR code. When you use an alias, the person sending you money doesn’t need to know who you bank with, your account number, or even the name on the account. The system checks the alias behind the scenes, verifies it, and routes the payment without exposing your sensitive information. Businesses can also use QR codes where you can just scan and pay.

Instant payment systems are also designed to meet international standards like ISO 20022 and the Principles for Financial Market Infrastructures (PFMIs), meaning you are using the same secure frameworks trusted by global financial institutions.

So, whether you are a business owner, a government agency, or just someone sending money to a friend, you can confidently use instant payments, knowing that your money and information are protected every step of the way, and your transactions are safe, private, and reliable.
