Caribbean economies were heavily affected by the global economic and financial crisis. For instance, many of these economies’ tourism source markets were negatively impacted, and as overall economic activity is highly dependent on these foreign markets, many governments’ financial positions deteriorated (in some cases moving from bad to worse). The coupling effect of large governments and lower revenue collections resulted in a heavier reliance on debt as fiscal gaps continued to widen.
