Heads of Massy Holdings and CDB to Join with Central Bank of Barbados to Discuss the Future of Caribbean Economies

Update: Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) President Dr. Gene Leon has been replaced by Ian Durant, CDB’s Director, Economics Department, on the panel.

In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, Caribbean countries have the opportunity to rebuild their economies better. How they can do this will be the topic of the Central Bank of Barbados’ 41st Annual Review Seminar keynote discussion, “Rebuilding Economies for the Future: Opportunities for Resilience through Diversification”. The event takes place online on Tuesday, July 27, 2021 at 9:10 a.m.

“For years, there have been calls for Barbados and other islands in the region to diversify our economies, and the pandemic has truly driven home that need,” revealed Central Bank Governor Cleviston Haynes. “But this is not something that can happen automatically; it will require carefully thought out strategies. For this reason, we felt it important to have representation on the panel from the private sector and multilateral agencies along with the Bank.”

The full panel comprises Dr. Gene Leon, President of the Caribbean Development Bank; Gervase Warner, President and Group CEO of Massy Holdings; and Michelle Doyle, Advisor to the Governor at the Central Bank.

During the 90-minute forum, which will be hosted by veteran broadcaster Sonia Gill, the panellists will explore how modernised payments systems, increased productivity, better facilitation of trade and investment, and development of the renewable energy sector, among others, can lead to stronger economies and improved livelihoods for the region’s people.

“This promises to be a constructive discussion that will offer insights as to the way forward for regional economies. We encourage anyone who is interested to register to attend either the keynote or the full four days of the Annual Review Seminar.”

The Central Bank’s 41st Annual Review Seminar, for which the keynote will be the kick-off session, takes place July 27-30 under the theme “Pursuing Resilience in the Shadow of COVID: Overcoming the Pandemic’s Economic Fallout”.
