Barbadians looking for a memento of the island’s 50th Anniversary of Independence can find it in two limited edition coins being issued by the Central Bank of Barbados.
“We are very pleased to be offering these coins because an occasion like our nation’s golden jubilee is something that deserves to be celebrated in a big way,” said Octavia Gibson, Deputy Director, Currency at the Central Bank. “With these coins, Barbadians, and all people who love Barbados, will have a lasting souvenir.”
The two coins – one fine silver (.999) and the other fine silver with gold-plated elements – feature the outline of Barbados in the middle of the sea and the “Barbados 50” logo as well as elements of the Coat of Arms and past and present circulation coinage. The silver coin is available at $300 and the silver and gold coin $400. Both coins have a face value of $50.
“We have only minted 1,000 of each coin, so we encourage everyone to get their orders in early,” Gibson said.
Along with the 50th anniversary commemorative coins, the Central Bank has issued a special circulation $50 note and is also offering paperweights that feature that note.
