Trade in services is fast becoming a key feature of global trading patterns. The numbers peak for themselves: since 1980, the value of commercial services trade has grown at an average annual rate of nearly 8%, outstripping growth in merchandise trade to the point where, today, services account for roughly 18% of recorded world trade, up from 16% in 1980.
