The objectives of this paper are to measure the impact of the turbulent economic conditions on the growth in debt as well as to explore the relationship between debt and economic growth. In Section 2, we identify the various shocks and attempt to measure their impact on the economy of Barbados. Section 3, analyses the debt build up during the period, taking into consideration the inherent problem associated with the changing maturity structure. The following section analyses the relationship between foreign savings and growth with the help of a neo-classical production function. The final section contains our conclusions and policy prescriptions.
