BARBADIAN-BORN INTERNATIONALLY-ACCLAIMED SCIENTIST TO
DELIVER 36TH SIR WINSTON SCOTT MEMORIAL LECTURE
The Central Bank of Barbados today announced that internationally-renowned Barbadian-born Scientist, Professor the Honourable Cardinal Warde will deliver the 2011 Sir Winston Scott Memorial Lecture, scheduled for the Frank Collymore Hall on Monday, November 21, 2011 at 8:00 p.m.
Professor Warde is currently the Professor of Electrical Engineering at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where his career as a scientist spans close to four decades.
His topic for this lecture – “Science, Business and Technology Education Reform for the Caribbean” – is most timely, given the numerous appeals for fundamental changes in the educational systems across the region, and the increasing focus on developing an entrepreneurial class. This lecture therefore is certain to be of immense interest to teachers, educators, businesspeople, government officials and students.
As a strong advocate for education reform in the Caribbean, he argues for the injection of greater investment and resources in industrial research and development, and for the creation of an entrepreneurial culture and the development of a strong economic pillar based on science and technology. He sees science and technology as critical to diversifying the tourism-dependent regional economies.
Consistent with this vision, Professor Warde has dedicated himself to working with Caribbean Governments and organisations to help stimulate economic development in the Caribbean area. To this end, he has established the Caribbean Science Foundation whose main aim is to develop and fund relevant Science and Technology projects within small companies and assist with education reform that places special emphasis on the basic sciences, business and entrepreneurship fundamentals, foreign languages and communications skills. Professor Warde has tremendous experiences in these areas.
As the holder of twelve patents on spatial light modulators, displays and optical information processing systems, he’s considered an innovator and pioneer in his field.
As an entrepreneur, Dr. Warde founded Optron Systems, Inc. in 1982, and then in 1999 co-founded Radiant Images, Inc. which was subsequently acquired by Hoya Corp. of Japan. Radiant Images was a manufacturer of liquid-crystal microdisplays for use in cellular phones, digital cameras, computer projectors, TV and computer monitors and virtual-reality display eyeglasses.
Professor Warde has received numerous honours and awards for personal achievement in science and engineering. He is the recipient of two honorary doctorate degrees in science: one from the University of the West Indies in October 2008, and another from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid in January 2009.
The Lecture is a tribute to the island’s first native Governor General, the late Sir Winston Scott.
