An Estimated 1.9 million Cents Collected in National Effort
The Central Bank of Barbados today announced that Barbadians donated an estimated 1,977,000 cents to its national collection effort.
Public Affairs Officer Novaline Brewster explained that the count from the effort continues and this figure is likely to increase as more collection bins come in from the organizations that participated.
The Bank, Alzheimer's Association and all three rotary clubs on the island coordinated the initiative to get persons to take their one cents to work, or Heroes' Square in the City, incelebration of World Alzheimer's Day on Friday, September 21.
Brewster described the initiative, which is one aspect of a 6-month effort to raise five million cents, as ""simply overwhelming and a demonstration that Barbadians are a very caring people"". “I would wish , on behalf of the Bank, the Alzheimer’s Association and Rotary to thank everyone who donated their cents . The response surpassed our expectations and we are eternally grateful,” Brewster stated.
She also commended the government , Barbados Private Sector Association, Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Small Business Association and Barbados Employers’ Confederation for their support in sensitizing their members and employees about the campaign.
Brewster reiterated that the campaign ends on December 31 and she encouraged Barbadians to continue to deposit their one cents in the yellow bins located in supermarkets, gas stations, credit unions , media houses, telecommunications companies , insurance companies, small shops, stores, law firms,. churches , and government offices.
To date , the drive has realised more than 2.5 million cents .
