Abstract
The packaging of university level courses and programmes for online delivery is often referred to in the literature as being particularly vulnerable to commodifying and commercialising higher education (Naidoo and Jamieson, 2005). This presentation, however, will examine the growth and development of online programmes and distance education by the UWI’s Open Campus using a social justice framework. The framework seeks to map the Open Campus’ model as a community based approach to online and distance education which distinguishes its philosophy from that of other online and distance education providers in the region. The presentation will also address the question of whether this model can create greater access to higher education in the Commonwealth Caribbean, specifically the countries served by the UWI in an affordable and sustainable way.
