The Central Bank of Barbados is once again hosting the Youth Pan Project, a steelpan camp for students aged nine to 18. This year’s session, which includes 53 campers, runs from July 8 to 26.
During the three-week camp, students will learn the basics of steelpan, including how to play a number of contemporary and classic songs. They will also receive guidance from several professional artistes on music and performance. The aim of the programme, the Bank explained, is to develop steelpan as a viable art form in Barbados and to create a bigger platform for its musicians. Several past campers have gone on to play professionally.
The camp will culminate with a public concert, the Youth Pan Project Extravaganza, which will give the students to display their skills. That event, which takes place July 27 at 4:00 p.m. in Church Village Green, will be free and open to the public.
